Book #45 of 50 of 2011: Mennonite in a Little Black Dress by Rhoda Janzen
This book was a humorously written memoir about the author finally getting out of an extremely dysfunctional marriage, getting seriously injured in a car accident immediately after, and flying home to her very Mennonite parents’ house to recuperate mentally and physically. Through Rhoda’s stories the reader comes to learn a bit about the Mennonite culture - turns out they’re not the same as the Amish - and more about her family and relationship history (I did feel a little misled as to how she originally framed the relationship, then later revealed more as the book went along, but, whatever.) Janzen’s writing style is fairly comedic and from her description, her mom sounds like a hoot.
Verdict - A book club pick that I wouldn’t have otherwise read, but enjoyed - and the other four girls did, too. Entertaining but far from groundbreaking - a good holiday/beach type read.
