Book 49 of 2011: Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Yet another YA dystopian novel, but hey, I loved The Hunger Games and thought Divergent was pretty good, too. This one imagines a United States in which love is not something special and pursued -it’s a disease called amor deliria nervosa, one that all Americans get “cured” of immediately following their 18th birthday. 17-year-old Lena is nearing the date of her own highly anticipated cure, but she starts to feel differently when she meets a young daredevil named Alex.
I finished this one in two days but it gave me a lot to think about- Safety vs choice in the decisions this imaginary government has made for its citizens, the symptoms of love that kind of do resemble illness…it’s worth a read.
